International Women’s Day 2022

As the sun sets on International Women’s Day (IWD) 2022, our CEO and Founder Annie Flamsteed has taken some time out to reflect on what it means to be a woman today.

“The year was 2016, and I was 21 years old. A university student in Brisbane, living walking distance from my uni, surrounded by friends, family, and with a lovely supportive partner [whom I am still with to this day]. I had launched a tech start up – at this stage called iNSPIRE BY ANNIE – aimed at improving the wellness of women and girls, and most if not all of my mentors were supportive men who were older than me.

I have an older brother who would move mountains for me and at this time, we spoke daily even though he was living in Los Angeles. My father, a hard taskmaster, encouraged me to speak my mind, have an opinion, get an education, and never turn down an opportunity. I was 21. I decided to drop out of uni and go full throttle on my start-up. A sole, female founder from Brisbane who had no experience founding a tech company, and I was giving up my stable future career in health sciences to take a big risk.”

The first person I told about this ambition was my father – a 50 something-year-old man. The second? A 42-year-old entrepreneur in residence who had lived in Silicon Valley and gone through YC. The third? Another man who wrote me my first venture cheque.

An uncommon experience for many women, my early days were filled with support and guidance from both men and women, however I’m painfully aware of the inequalities that have been pushed upon women for generations. I’ve seen the impact of this firsthand, which is why IWD is so important. With that said, it shouldn’t just be one day a year that we reflect on how amazing women are and continue to strive for better opportunities, it needs to be something that we as society do all the time.”
